Oscillating Hoe, or Stirrup Hoe

Free Shipping on orders over $50 to the continental USA. If under $50, shipping is $5.00

oscillating or stirrup hoe three sizes of oscillating hoe 8 inch stirrup hoe double oscillating hoes for straddle weeding

The oscillating hoe or stirrup hoe is used for heavy weeding and for preparing garden spaces. It does cut deeper than the Sweeps, so be cautious around your crop plants.

  • The 6" is used for narrows rows. Also for straddle weeding.
  • The 8" oscillating hoe is the best general purpose size.
  • The 12" is used for fine or sandy soils. Not for hard soils.

Use the Oscillating Hoe to prepare your garden and keep your paths clean. Then use the Sweeps for weekly maintenance weeding to eliminate new weeds. Be sure to take a look at our article called The Secret of Easy Weeding

This double-bolted bracket design is much stronger than the weak single bolt pivot used on the Glaser stirrup hoe.

The Spreader Bar is primarily used for straddle weeding, but it can also be used to mount a single oscillating hoe way out to one side for weeding under bushy plants like tomatoes. The spreader bar is 14-3/4" long.

Straddle Weeding can only be done with a double wheeled model. If done with the weeding blades (sweeps) then a spreader bar is not used. If done using the 6" oscillating hoes then the spreader bar is required. You can not mount two 8" hoes to the spreader bar.

Hoss push plow furrowing plow - rear view Hoss hilling plow plows on double wheel unit

Plows are used in two different ways:

Position the edges together to create a great furrowing plow. It creates a large deep furrow for potatoes or transplants. The furrow is too deep for most seeds.

Or use individually as hilling plows to move soil into your planting rows. Hilling is a weeding technique that buries and smothers weed seedlings by moving path soil onto the crop row of taller plants like corn.

Disc Harrows are used for cultivating and weeding:

The Hoss Disc Harrow is used to cultivate the soil before planting, and to weed between the rows. The concave disks stir the top inch of soil for cultivation, and uproot weeds at the same time.

This attachment includes a left and right disk harrow set, each containing three disks, and a mounting bar. Each set can be rotated to face in or out, and is easily locked in a wide variety of positions without tools by moving simple ring pins.

When used on a double wheel unit, it can be used to straddle weed in it's disc cultivator configuration. The discs can positioned with a 3" gap to move soil to the center area, or with a 5" gap to move soil away from the center.

Hoss Seeder Attachment

There is so much to say about this seeder that we made a seperate page for it.

Click here for the Seeder page.

"The new Hoss Seeder works like a dream. It drops seeds with great accuracy of spacing and depth. I am using it on my two acre CSA garden and I sure don't miss my old seeder. Everything about the seeder is very high quality and made to last. For the price, there is not a better seeder out there."
Kevin Ford - Fiat Farm CSA in Wichita Kansas

All the Hoss attachments in action!   Here you can see the plows, stirrup hoes, sweeps, and cultivator teeth being used. The video also shows both single and double wheel hoes being used. A single wheel unit can do hilling one side at a time.

Video created by a happy customer.   This video review shows the stirrup hoe attachment in use. She gives a nice demonstration of why it is important to choose an oscillating hoe width that you can easily push through your soil and weeds.

Customer Testimonials

Thanks for telling me about your oscillating hoe! It arrived yesterday when I was at work. I bolted it on after supper and went out to give it a test on the grass that has been so much trouble in my garden. An hour later the rows were finished! It was really great. It used to take me about 3 hours to do the rows. Thanks so much,
in Stuart, FL
