Manual Trenching Tool Types
There are two basic tasks these tools can be used for. We will describe each task briefly, and tell which one serves that purpose...
● Digging -- To dig the trench. Use a Digging Shovel, Sharpshooter, Trench Hoe, and long Pick Mattock.
● Clean-out -- Remove loose soil from the bottom. Use a Trench Cleanout Shovel, or a Bottom Digger.
As you see, there is not any crossover between the tools. The trenching tool designs are very different for each purpose. If I rent a trencher, do I still need hand tools?
Yes, you probably will. That is because you can not get a power trencher quite as close to buildings as you would like.
If you are trenching from building to building, the beginning of the trench can be pretty close to the starting building. But as you approach the target building, the chassis of the trencher gets in the way and you have to stop short. Finishing off the beginning and the end of a trench is the job of manual trenching tools. As well as doing the clean out of the loose bottom soil if you are laying pipe. Power trenchers are great, but they can only do so much.
