Do you want to work up sod or hard soil? Need to create tall ridges for potatoes? This tool will do both!

This heavy-duty 8" wide triangular hoe easily cuts through sod and penetrates firm soil, which makes it great for digging and tilling gardens. It is also called a Ridging Hoe because it gets used to loosen, pull, and pile soil around the base of plants like potatoes. This process is called ridging or hilling because it creates a long raised ridge of soil that encourages a more productive potato crop.

5 pound tool, with a 5 foot long wooden handle.

Customer Reviews of the Pointed Hoe

"The best digging tools you can buy, with the best price you can find. The grub and pointed hoes are on another level compared to a shovel. If you're looking to plant trees bare root or potted, invest in your time and health as these really save your back and wrists. It used to be a workout to dig a hole for a small 5 gal tree with a shovel, now I barely break a sweat and the hole is dug much faster. These tools should last you a lifetime with proper care, plus being able to get any replacement part is a home run for me."

"Well made triangle hoes. Good heavy duty handles and nice heavy hoe blades."

Mike, in MO   4.5 star rating

"Good solid tools. Good value. These are not heirloom tools but should last a long time if cared for. I didn't like the finish on the handles as I don't like the clear, glossy look. I wish more tool makers would take the time to sand the handles a bit more ergonomically and use linseed oil. I will take the time to remove the finish, reshape the handles and oil the wood. This of course is a personal preference."

Robert, from CA   4 star rating

"I have several of your hoes already and have advised over 100 people to buy them in the last few years. I am a consultant for gardeners. I recently bought 2 of the "warren" hoes and at first i thought it would be too heavy for my use. but now that I have gotten used to it I like it a lot..Good quality and made to last a long time. God bless you for providing such tools for garden enthusiasts such as myself.. "

Pointed or Ridging Hoe

"Hoes are among the most useful of gardening tools: they grub out rocks and roots, cultivate and mound soil, carve drills for planting seeds, and dispatch weeds. Different types of hoes, however, are better suited to some tasks than others....draw hoes consist of a blade that is usually set at less than a right angle to the handle. The blade may be broad with a flat cutting surface, narrow, pointed, or pronged...."

"For really tough jobs such as breaking up soil for a new bed, Easy Digging offers a pointed or ridging hoe that has a beefy, two-pound, eight inch, triangular, forged steel blade that digs through rocks and gravel as well as soil. It is also terrific for mounding soil around potatoes."

Irish video with good tips for using a Ridging Hoe. He shows how to use it to hill up soil around root crop plants, and a good tip for cabbage plants. His tool is a little smaller and shorter than what we sell here in the US, but the technique is the same. Credit: Fruit Hill Farm Tools / Ireland

How to use a Pointed Ridging Hoe

Pointed hoes are really just grub hoes with a triangular-shaped blade. So our instructions for them are the same. With this tool you dig and cultivate with a steady chop-pull motion that is very quick, but also gentler on your back than the stomp-bend-lift motion used with a shovel or spade.

Forging Process:

Forging is the process of forming and shaping metals through the use of hammering, pressing or rolling. The process begins with a bar or slab of steel which is heated to its plastic deformation temperature, then hammered or "kneaded" between dies to the desired shape and size. Forging is a ancient metalworking process that was done by a blacksmith pounding metal on an anvil with a hammer..

During the hot forging process, the steel's coarse grain structure is broken up and replaced by finer grains. Mechanical properties are improved by aligning the grain flow to obtain the desired directional strength. Forging can produce a piece that is stronger than an equivalent cast or machined part.
