Reviews of our Grub Hoe from 2017 to 2018

A grub hoe (also called a grubbing hoe) is mainly used to dig and till the soil. It will also chop through sod to break it up and allow removal

I ordered a Grub Hoe and a small Maddock. Both arrived in a timely manner and in good condition. These are heirloom tools - tools not only like my grandfather used but just like he HAD. Quality products that will allow me to reforest my clay soil land without hurting my back.

I bought both the pick ax and the 6 inch hoe. Both were very well made and durable. I used the pick ax to break up the dirt and then used the 6 inch hoe to scrape out trench. Worked great!

I was very pleased to find a website for hand tools to do heavy duty digging for our yard remodel. The grub hoes that I purchased (one in each size) have been doing a great job. And the bonus file has been so very useful on all of our tools!

The hoes i bought (grape, grub and pointed) are good quality utilitarian tools that if maintained should last for a long long time. The free file was a welcome bonus. Oh, by the way, I received my hoes in a few days. All the boxes checked for A+ customer satisfaction. Thank you!

Got the 6" grub hoe and Chillington fork hoe. They are easy to use and way better than what you'd find in big box stores. I found the handle to be weaker than what I was used to in East Africa. They use oval shaped handles there (like what you find with mattocks) and which prevents the hoe from spinning if loose and also gives it better firmness. Overall these are the best tools I could find in the US for small gardening tasks and would highly recommend them.

Grub hoe or Azada digging action

My goal is to get rid of the grass in my yard and to plant ground cover and xeriscape the yard so it doesn't require so much water. I have used the grape hoe (to move mulch around), the pointed hoe to dig up a fire pit that had rocks in it), and the grub hoe (for digging up the grass and tilling the soil), and each works very well for different uses. i used the grub hoe to help plant two trees and it was out-performing the shovel being used by the other person, especially when we had to take out some larger roots. A couple of swings and the roots broke off easily. I highly recommend these tools, and I know I will use them over and over. I especially like the chart of the different tools and their uses. They helped me choose my order and also are useful as I get to know the tools and their uses.

I bought the six inch grub hoe by accident, I actually wanted the grape hoe, but when it arrived I couldnt part with it so I bought both, now I have the whole line up of tools from ez digging. I had enough of the cheap stamped steel, both Ameerican and Chinese, that passes for the norm these days, that infereior quality will not hold up to the the rocky Maine soil, but these do! Man using a grub hoe with good ergonomic posture

I bought the six inch grub hoe, and I'm very happy with the quality of the tool. The buying process was also fine. However, I was a little disappointed when I received the grub hoe and realized that the size of the tool is measured by width, not the height of the blade. (In retrospect, that makes perfect sense and it was my mistake, but in my mind I was buying a tool that had a six inch long blade and from the pictures appeared to be perhaps four inches in width. I would make one suggestion -- perhaps EasyDigging.com could include a label on the web image that clarifies the measurement of the of the blade. If I had understood before my purchase, I would have bought the smaller hoe. That said, these are high quality tools and I can make this work for my purposes.

The Easy Digging grub hoes and picks are the ace for cleaning my culverts and ditches. Here in West Virginia I hit shale a few inches down. My method is the following. I use the 4 inch or 6 inch grub hoes for pulling out leaves and loam. The ditch might require deepening. If I hit hard shale, I will break it up with the spike end of the pick axe, then scoop it out with the grub hoes. If I hit soft shale or clay I break it with the pick mattock. These tools are all I need to maintain my ditches. They are the most efficient returns on energy of any tool I've used. The stress on my back is minimal; the longer handles make a huge difference. Roughly these Easy Digging tools are 4x more efficient than the junk offered by the hardware stores. These tools are very well built and take a beating. No need to worry about bending or breaking them.

Two sizes of grub hoes

I bought a 6 inch grub hoe to be used to maintain our existing garden and to expand our garden by 5,000 square feet. It has taken the place of my garden spade forever. It is such a joy to use and it's so much better than a spade or shovel when digging or moving soil. My grub hoe has saved me so much time and work during this expansion project. It is one of my most valuable garden tools. I will be purchasing the 4 inch grub hoe to be used for some of the finer work in the garden. Thank you for providing such high quality and useful tools. I am sure this hoe will be by my side for decades.

Great tool overall well and well made. Two things that need to be improved.
1) the handle needs to be made oval or not plumb round the tool tends to roll in the hand when working with it.
2) the part of the hand that fits in the hoe head needs to be bigger for a tighter fit before the wedge is inserted.

I have purchased from Easy Digging in the past. I needed some heavy duty hand tools for work in my garden and I immediately thought of Easy Digging. I am a 71 year old great grandmother.
I let my garden get overgrown with weeds and Bermuda grass after I injured a knee. Then even though the knee was better, I avoided the garden for another year. I knew that I needed something tougher than the usual garden tools offered at the local stores.
I remembered my father having a garden tool he called a grubbing hoe many years ago (1950's). So I did an internet search and found that few people sold such things now days. I settled on EasyDigging.com. as the best choice.
I read the reviews and watched the how-to videos and sent off for two tools that I thought would do the job. I could not be more pleased. The tools seem heavy at first but the hoe head and handle are perfectly balanced. The weight of the hoe bites into the dirt all on it's own without effort on my part. All I have to do is lift it and let it drop! Taking out shrubs takes a bit more effort but most of the work I needed it for is Bermuda grass.
I cleared the veggie garden area two weeks ago and today I finished a 10' x 30' grass matted mess that I will plant grape vines in. Now I need a grape hoe. :-) Guess where I will buy that at?

Fantastic tool.Added a "back-saver" attachment for better leverage as I have a bad back. Dug a 1000 foot trench in no time to bury a cable satellite line. Used it to pull out multiple Oak tree shoots on a steep hillside. Cut right through through roots. Maintained its sharpness.

I purchased a grub hoe to remove the lawn from my backyard. I appreciate the simplicity and ruggedness of the tool. The instructions to assemble the hoe were easy to follow. I would like to stress that it's very important to follow the instructions! The first time I did it, I tried a shortcut and hammered in the wedge rather than pound the wedge on the ground as instructed. The blade came loose after a few days of use. After disassembling the hoe, which was easy, and reassembling per instructions, everything worked perfectly.

I have slowly been working on clearing grass from areas of my yard to replace with planters and raised beds. It was back breaking work until my grub hoe arrived. I won't say it's fun work now, lol, but it is certainly a lot easier. This is the first 'good' garden tool I've ever owned, but it won't be the last now that I see what a difference a quality tool makes!

I first contacted Greg to see which size of grub hoe I should buy. Based on my needs he recommended the 6" hoe, and I'm glad I got that one. I never asked country of origin on these but it turns out they're from Brazil (I may have the country wrong, but I know the head isn't made in the USA if anybody is really strict about buying American-made tools).
If you're on the fence about buying one, I'll say that as soon as you pick this thing up you'll find jobs for it. I dug a trench with mine after turning a lot of soil over in my garden. There is a reason this design has been popular with farmers and gardeners, all over the world, for millennia.
Follow the handle installation instructions (included) carefully or you might crack your handle like I did. Thanks to the miracle of modern wood glues it'll be okay, but better to avoid the problem altogether.

Great tool that really made my job easier. I had a 50x10 plot on the side of the house that needed cleanup and redesign. Previous owner left a trailer and other debris. I used to use a spade on hands and knees rolling old grass and weeds. The grub hoe with long handle was a lifesaver on my back and overall experience.

I was referred to Easy Digging by DavidTheGood from http://www.thesurvivalgardener.com/ I purchased the, '6" Grub Hoe - with 60 inch handle'. The handle is very thick and metal in the hoe head are very thick carbon steel. It takes an edge very well when you need to touch it up after grubbing up a good section of sod/roots. I am very pleased with my purchase.

Using the hoe was fantastic! It isn't for heavy, rocky, dense soil, but it was great for long neglected yard work. It replaces those light duty rototiller that you could rent when limited access is a problem. I got a large area done in less time than digging with a shovel with far less back, leg, and arm strain.
Thwack it into the ground, lift and push the soil up, pull out and repeat!
I used the wide hoe to loosen the soil followed by my seventy year old Dad using the smaller hoe to break up the pieces; then raking in preparation for planting. Perfect.
Happy as a clam! Replaces a rototiller.
The thinner one bends a little in tougher ground, but it really wasn't designed for that.
I would like more choice in the length of a handle to adjust for height and arm strength for my Dad.
We also have raised garden boxes and a shorter handle would be easier to use.

My only less than five star was the price, but I willingly shelled out the $40 for the grub hoe. I understand after years of gardening and farming that quality tools cost significantly more, but last a lot longer (assuming proper care).

Thank You!!! for such wonderful products at a reasonable price. We hope you folks stay in business for a long time to come. We purchased 4 items and were satisfied with them all. The metal on the hoe's could have been a little heavier to eliminate a little bounce, but I'm sure that most don't like a heavy tool to work with. The long handles on the hoes are not long enough. 60" may be good for a 5 foot guy, the need to be at least one foot longer and ideally for someone like me at 71" tall the handle needs to be 7 foot long. It will be great if you offer longer handles for your hoes. Now the hoe is of very good quality and does the job well; I just wish I didn't need to bend so much to use it.

I purchased a grub hoe. The quality of the product exceeded my expectations. It has made the task of digging a trench, an edging, or a hole so much easier and faster. Being a female, not having the upper body strength of a man, makes it a great benefit. I am so impressed with the quality of the product and service. So much so that I am looking forward to purchasing my next item, the Fork Hoe.
