Sensei Achterberg sent us this great picture along with the following message:
"I did not purchase the grub hoe for gardening, I purchased it as a Kuwa, (a traditional Okinawan weapon that a farmer could use for self defense against the Japanese Samurai in the 18th and 19th century).
As you see I am a traditional Okinawan weapons practitioner, and this was one of the few weapons I did not have in my collection.
If you are in the Antioch area and want to know more about the Antioch Kenyukai Shubukan, please visit www.1shoken.com
With a little research I discovered that there are three spellings of the name for this tool / weapon: Kuwa, Kue, and Gawa
There are also some interesting YouTube videos showing how this tool is used in the Kuwa Kata.
