Hoss standard wheel cultivator Seeder attachment Deluxe single wheel hoe

This combination lets you seed, cultivate, and weed!

Our weeding sweeps are just like the Planet Jr blades that were used on small farms for so many decades. They are called Sweeps because each blade angles back to allow plant matter to slide off the blades. By making a shallow cut beneath the soil surface they kill the weeds without stirring up new weed seeds.

Click here to learn about using Weeding Sweeps with both the single and double wheel models.

oscillating or stirrup hoe Seeder attachment plows on Hoss double wheel

Seed, cultivate, weed, and plow - with 1 machine!

The oscillating hoe is for heavy weeding. It cuts deeper than our weeding sweeps, so it is better for grass and big weeds. The sharpened spring steel blade will cut on both the forward and back stroke. The 8" width is the most popular size.   Click here to learn more about using the oscillating hoe attachment.

Each plow set includes both a left and a right plow. When assembled in a V they will open a large furrow. They can also be switched around to pull soil back into a furrow to close it, or to create small planting ridges. If just one is used it can move soil up and over the base of young plants like corn in an operation called "hilling". They are for garden soil only - not for sod.   Click here to learn about using the Plows with both the single and double wheel models.

Video of garden seeder details.   Quick 1 minute video shows how the Hoss planter attaches to your wheel hoe. Good views of the construction and of the seed plate and hopper. Also shows the Row Marker in use.

Video from the Bayou Gardener.   Shows planting of okra and beans. Good details on setting up the planter, changing seed plates, and switching seeds. We recommend testing the seeder over a tray like he does in this video.

Customer Testimonials

The new Hoss Planter works like a dream. It drops seeds with great accuracy of spacing and depth. I am using it on my two acre CSA garden and I sure don't miss my old seeder. Everything about the seeder is very high quality and made to last. For the price, there is not a better seeder out there.
- Fiat Farm CSA in Wichita Kansas

We are very happy with the Hoss garden seeder. It is so much better than the Earthway seeder we used before. The seed spacing is much more reliable. We will be getting some weeding attachments and the plows to use with it.

Garden Seeder Tips and Tricks

Tips for Successful Seeding

  • Clean your seeds
    1. Spread seed on opposite color paper for easy sorting
    2. Remove any extra large seeds, they can plug a hole
    3. Remove dust and chaff from your seeds
  • Test for proper seed drop BEFORE you start planting
    1. Load a few tablespoons into the hopper
    2. Place a metal pie can under the seed drop tube
    3. Lift the seeder's rear wheel and steadily rotate it
    4. Listen for seeds steadily dropping into the pie pan
    5. Watch the Bayou Gardener video above to see this test
    6. If too few seeds are dropping:
      • Are a few extra large seeds are blocking holes?
If yes, sort your seeds better.
      • Are most of the seeds too big for the holes?
If yes, drill the seed plate holes slightly larger.
    7. If too many seeds are dropping:
      • Do two or three seeds fit in each hole?
        1. Is the correct seed plate installed?
        2. For seeds with a low germination rate this can be useful.
        3. You can drill a custom seed plate with smaller holes.
(see the Blank Seed Plates above)
  • Stop and check the Hoss planter occasionally
    • Do this at the start of each row.
    • Make sure the brush is not to tight or loose.
    • Check that the drive wheel is turning freely.
    • Make sure the depth is set correctly.
    • Check to see if any seed holes are plugged.

Tricks for Adjusting the Seed Spacing

Seed spacing is determined solely by the number of holes in the seed plate. You do not need to change any gears or sprockets.

Seed spacing can be decreased by drilling more holes.

Seed spacing can be increased by covering some holes. This can be done by putting small pieces of masking tape on the bottom side of the seed plate to block some of the holes. Taping the bottom prevents the brushes from peeling off the tape.

The chart below describes the various seed spacings that can be achieved.

Spacing# of holesSpacing if 1/2 of holes taped
1 - 3/16"162 - 3/8"
1 - 7/8"103 - 3/4"
2 - 3/8"84 - 3/4"
3 - 1/8"66 - 1/4"
3 - 3/4"5-
4 - 3/4"49 - 1/2"
6 - 3/8"3-
9 - 1/2"219"
19"1-
  • Stop and check the Hoss planter occasionally
    • Do this at the start of each row.
    • Make sure the brush is not to tight or loose.
    • Check that the drive wheel is turning freely.
    • Make sure the depth is set correctly.
    • Check to see if any seed holes are plugged.
  • Plant in loose but FIRM soil
    • Good soil-to-seed contact is best for germination
    • Freshly roto-tilled soil has too much air space. Water it a few times to firm the soil.
