This Hoss walk-behind planter is the strongest seeder on the market. And after planting, switch to the oscillating hoe, plows, or the cultivator teeth to keep your garden rows clean for the rest of the season. It is all steel, with just a little plastic for the hopper and the seed plates. Finished off with a set of Amish made ash handles, it is a heirloom quality tool.

Be sure to watch the push planter videos halfway down the page.

Built to work in normal and hard soils. It will also handle soils that are a little crusty, like from after a rain. But it is NOT for fine sandy soils or soils that get very airy or fluffy after rototilling. (see our Big Wheel Walk-behind Garden Seeder instead for those rare soils)

Customer Reviews of the Hoss Push Planter

"I purchased the Wheel Hoe Planter. It is great. I had no trouble assembling it and it appears to be very well made. I “test drove” it and it is easy to use. I have two words of advice though. Buy the extra plates and treat the handles with a wood treatment. I use a clear wood preservative and it significantly extends the life of the wood. "

Mike M, from NE

"I have 3 garden sights. Each is in excess of 4,000 square feet. The walk-behind seed planter I bought is excellent at planting peas and beans. The plate for planting sweet corn needs a minor adjustment. I think the set of seed plates that come with our purchase should include a plate with no holes so that we can drill a plate to meet our needs (such as sunflower seeds). Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and because of the quality of the product I believe it will last a lifetime. I give the product a 5 star rating."

Mark, in MS

"Good to deal with. My garden planting came up very sporadic, pea rows are very intermittent, did very well on corn not so hot on beans. However, this could be a seed problem. I was impressed with functionality and am not ready to give up on this yet. I do not believe this is an out of the box expert tool, it is gonna take a little fidgeting. I consider this review a little premature."

Layne, from KS

"It is that time of year and we used the push garden planter / seeder tool for the first time today and it worked great. Thank you."

Ankie, from AL

"the best walk behind seed planter on the market. this planter will be the last one you will buy. Only one thing needs change is row marker needs to be longer. I added 12 inch , so I can run my tiller down the rows."

Watch the Hoss Seed Planter at work...

Video from the Bayou Gardener.   Shows planting of okra and beans. Good details on setting up the planter, changing seed plates, and switching seeds. We recommend testing the seeder over a tray like he does in this video.

Video of walk-behind seed planter.   Quick 1 minute video shows how the Hoss planter attaches to your wheel hoe. Good views of the construction and of the seed plate and hopper. Also shows the Row Marker in use.

The optional Row Marker is adjustable from 6" to 18" row spacing. It easily flips from the left side to the right side, and has a central (up) storage position for when not in use.

The main bracket is fastened to the wheel hoe using two of the same bolts that also attach the seeder.

This Loaded package includes an 8" oscillating hoe, also called a Stirrup hoe or a Hula hoe. The replaceable blade tilts 20 degrees forward and back for optimal weeding on both forward and backward strokes of the wheel hoe. It is a more aggressive and deeper-cutting weeder than the Sweeps.

For full details on the use and range of the oscillating hoes, please visit the Oscillating Hoes page.

The Loaded package includes the Furrowing/Hilling Plow Set. This is a pair of Left and Right plows that can be installed singly or as a pair. For hilling (putting soil over the base of a row of crop plants) just a single plow is used. Installed as a pair in a V shape they are used for opening a large furrow. Installed as an Inverted pair (left plow on far right side, and vice-versa) they will pull soil to the center to create a ridge or close a furrow.

For full details on the use of the Plows, please visit the Plow Set page.

Seed Plate Details

Six seed plates for the most common garden crops are included with this seeder. They are listed as plates 1 through 6 below.

There are optional plates 7 to 10, and blank plates in three thicknesses, which are also described below.

Plates 1 through 6 are included with the Hoss seeder and with the Hoss Push Planter.

  • #1 – broccoli, cabbage, turnips, mustard and other fine seeds (8 holes, 3/32″ thick)
  • #2 – onion, similar small seeds (6 holes, 3/32” thick)
  • #3 – okra, and {pelleted* carrots, lettuce, chard and beets} (6 holes, 3/16” thick)
  • #4 – small sweet corn, popcorn (4 holes, 3/16” thick)
  • #5 – small peas and beans (6 holes, 1/4” thick)
  • #6 – medium beans, peas, large sweet corn, field corn (4 holes, 1/4” thick)

Plates 7 through 10 are optional plates. They can be purchased individually or as a set at the Seed Plate page.

  • #7 – radish, leek, asparagus, spinach (6 holes, 3/32” thick)
  • #8 – cucumber, watermelon (2 holes, 3/32” thick)
  • #9 – butterbeans, lima beans (2 holes, 3/16” thick)
  • #10 – squash, pumpkin (1 hole, 3/16” thick)

There are Blank plates that you can drill for special seeds or spacing. They can be purchased the Seed Plate page.

  • Thin Blank Plate - 3/32" thick
  • Medium Blank Plate - 3/16" thick
  • Thick Blank Plate - 1/4" thick

*Note: These 4 seeds are pelleted to allow them to work in walk-behind seeders. Raw (non-pelleted) seeds for these 4 crops do not work well in ANY seeder.

This seed planter uses flat round seed plates that are 3/32", 3/16" or 1/4" thick for small, medium, and large seeds. Holes are drilled through these plates to create seed spacings ranging from 1-1/4" up to 19". The seed plate makes one revolution for every 19" of ground travel - so plate with 1 hole gives 19" spacing, 2 holes give 9.5" spacing, 3 holes give 6.3" spacing, etc.

Hoss Planter Mechanical Details

Some of the other highlights of this walk-behind seed planter design include the heavy-duty shoe type opener that it uses to create a furrow for the seeds. This shoe is like a narrow plow that pushes the soil up and apart, while seeds fall down through the steel tube that passes down between the back of the shoe opener. The depth of the furrow is controlled by the notched depth-control bar that rises above the wheel hoe's tool bar and sets just behind the front wheel. There is also a rear drive & compactor wheel that is toothed for good traction in firm soils. And lastly there is an optional Row Marker that is adjustable from 6" to 18" row spacing and easily flips from the left to the right. You can buy a push planter online using the Buy buttons at the top of this page. The Row Marker is sold separately in the tabs above.

Why would I need a wheel hoe AND a push planter?

If your garden is big enough to need a push seed planter, then it is also big enough to benefit from having a wheel hoe. With the wheel hoe (also called a wheel cultivator) you can clean the garden in the Spring (even when too damp for a tiller), work in soil amendments, and prepare the seed bed. Later, after the planting is done, you can put it back to work keeping the rows weed free. There are attachments for the Hoss that range from Sweeps, to Plows, to a Disc Harrow, to Oscillating Hoes, to Straddle Weeders. If you don't know what all those are, start on our Attachments page.
