The grub hoe is a fantastic tool for places too tough for rototillers. Turned hard clay into a garden that is easy to till the following season.

Grubbing Hoes

I'm extremely happy with these tools. I bought the grub hoe, the grape hoe and the rake hoe. I was looking for something to help me remove some turf so I could prep an area of my yard to install some grass sod. I googled an inquiry of what is the best tool to use to remove turf and it advised to use a grub hoe. I YouTubed people using a grub hoe and saw a video of someone using the grub hoe and grape hoe from Easydigging. I said that's what I need. Ordering the tools was very easy and Greg is so gracious and helpful. I even interrupted his dinner one night with a question about attaching the blades in the handle but he was so nice and helped me. The tools work. They work as advertised and they are great at making a difficult job easier. I highly recommended them and Easy Digging.

I bought these tools as they are similar to the grubbing hoes used in Guatemala. They are sturdy and do the job well.

I purchased both sizes of the grub hoes, both are well built, love the long handles & make easy work of weeding/cultivating. one hoe was missing a handle wedge but they send me a wedge replacement in short order. Great customer service!

Excellent product you can not believe the feel in your hand, the power of a hoe with the weight to do the work so your back doesn't have to.

Two sizes of grub hoes

This grub hoe is SO well made. It is making my yard project much easier (digging up all of the grass to replace with flowers and gravel/stone pathways, etc.). The customer service is also incredible. I was so excited to receive the hoe and get digging that I put the blade on facing the wrong way, ugh. It would not budge (see first sentence above!). In a last ditch effort, I emailed the company for suggestions on how to remove. Greg was prompt and thorough in his response and most importantly, kind. Although I followed his instructions, I had to order a new hoe and wasn't even upset about it because of the quality; it's well worth it at this price. It's been such a timesaver!

Excellent tool, does everything I need it to do in my 2000 sq ft garden. Build quality superb at half the price of some others I looked at. Shipping fast and free. It doesn't get any better than that.

In a new garden book I bought, the author talked all about different garden tools that are helpful and what they do best. The author mentioned the "grub hoe" which is used in many countries across the world, but not so much in the US for some reason. So, I wanted to give it a try. The author recommended Easy Digging as the best place to purchase and I'm glad we did. It's a high quality and easy to use tool that is far superior to a normal garden hoe sold at typical garden shops. It's been ideal for clearing large areas of weeds and turning over dirt. The customer service from Easy Digging has been excellent as well. Highly recommend!

I am very happy with the quality of the hoes that I purchased (4" & 6"). The purchase was simple and easy and the hoes arrived quickly. Both hoes have proven their value and I recommend them for anyone needing a high quality heavy duty hoe.

Two years I started to convert 1/2 acre of my property to a meadow. We brush hogged the land and had 17 native trees planted. This year I am planting a dozen shrubs along with some sedge, blacked eyed susans and coneflowers. I am using the grub hoe to direct some runoff and the broad fork to turn the solid for planting. So far all is going well. The tools are fantastic.

I bought the grub hoe, and it's an amazing piece of engineering! It's amazing how much easier it is using this to dig a hole. You use the "swing" motion to drive the head into the ground, and pull to move the dirt. Amazing! They use these quite a lot in Asia, and it's great to have access to it here the USA. I compared it to a regular spade, and it was no comparison. A few shovel-fulls of a regular spade, and I felt it was much more tiring. Super solid construction, and feels like it will last a lifetime. Shipment was great, and item was extremely well packaged. They also provided an aluminum "wedge" to mount the handle in the head. Great attention to quality! Great item! Highly recommended to anyone digging any large hole.

I have a lot of scrubby oak-like growth around the edges of my "lawn" (such as it is). The growth catches the leaves when I blow them off the "lawn". I wanted a way to remove that growth. I'd used hoes when I was a kid, so I thought of that, and did some research on the web. What I saw on the EasyDigging site impressed me the most, so I decided to spend a bit more than I could have and try them out. I have to say that I was quite impressed by the instructions for assembling the hoes; I did what they recommended, and it worked exactly as they said. These hoes are top quality, and I'm glad to have tried them.

I purchased the 4" grub hoe and the pointed hoe. WOW! We just used them the day before yesterday to do some major work after some rain and what articulate and powerful tools they are if the ground has moisture in it. Very impressed. Both have so many functions that they were being used far more than the shovels to even do trench work. The long handles and angle of the blades, particulary on the pointed hoe made it great for removing dirt from trenches like a shovel, and also putting it back in from the banks of the trench. We were working on slopes and it still handled everything. The two tools work great together. Great products!!

I purchased the 4" grub hoe and the 46" handled pick to dig a 4-6" wide, 22" deep 24' trench in compacted caliche-like "soil" for an electrical circuit between the house and the garage. The tools arrived on time and come disassembled with clear and easy instructions for putting together. I also purchased a San Angelo bar from a big box store at the owner's suggestion. Between the three tools, I was able to dig the trench over a few days, working in the afternoon in 95-degree heat for an hour or two each day after work. The grub hoe was essential, and I used the bar more than the pick, but the pick was useful and will be handy for other projects. While it was a fair amount of work it was not that bad for an overweight male nearing retirement. The tools are high quality and if you have a trench digging fetish or even a small job like mine, they will not disappoint.

I used the grub hoes ( a 4" and a 6") to build raised beds and it worked great. No need for a tiller or fossil fuels. These tools are VERY well made. Love it.

If I had had this grub hoe when I was younger doing all sorts of yard work for my parents I believe my back wouldn't be in as bad a shape as it is in now. This hoe is awesome and so easy to use! I love the height of it. I am six foot and it feels perfect for me. I have mad a couple of fresh beds with it and dug up two bushes easily. Each bush came up in just a few minutes without much effort. I now have several other projects in mind now that I know how well it works. I can't stop bragging on it!

First off, I am a young man trying to start my own organic farm and nursery. I was in need of a quality hand hoe/grub hoe. The 6" grub hoe from easydigging stood out as the best, and let me tell you, it is. I can dig a decently large garden bed, till in compost, make my rows, dig holes to plant, and then cover em with this tool. All in a bout an hour, where it used to take me ages with my shovel and mattock. Great tool! Has completely revolutionized my gardening capabilities. Even dug out my neighbors well line with this hoe. I also had an issue where I broke the handle to the hoe initially, but Greg from easy digging, after hearing my story, sent me another brand new handle and wedge. God bless you Greg and thank you for your business!

My new grub hoe is my new favorite yard tool. I highly recommend your tools for urban yard work! I bought the hoe and an additional handle to replace a hoe handle that I'd broken trying to cut a root. Now, having two capable hoe, I can till my yard much easier. The larger one purchased from you breaks through the Nebraska "hard pan" dirt easily. It holds an edge and sharpens easily with the accompanying file I purchased with it. The replacement handle was an exact replacement for the older hoe handle that my dad purchased for me 50+ years ago. I have no doubt that I'll hand both hoe down to my grandson! BTW- The yard is looking much better as I bust up dirt and plant seed that comes up easily in the cultivated dirt.

Man using a grub hoe with good ergonomic posture

Before using the 4' & 6' grub hoes in our garden (yes, we bought both because there are two of us) we used a POS lightweight hoe from the local 'big box store' with less than desirable results. That light hoe was hard to use because it had no weight behind it and the blade would bend when we were really given'er a workout. Ain't nobody like a lightweight hoe! Life is different now that we hoe with our Easy Digging Grub Hoes! With every swing of the hoe, we make progress in our rocky Ozarks soil, which reduces time spent hoeing so we can enjoy building more stuff on our homestead. We originally heard about Easy Digging tools from David The Good on dirty ol' YouTube. That guy loves to hoe & so do his kids! So why not give'er a try, right!? If it's good enough for David, it's more than good enough for us. If you are a gardener, like us, who needs a good hoe to grow, we definitely recommend these sturdy hoes fo sho! - Brian + Erin

I am a small-framed woman in her early sixties. I purchased the 6" grub hoe and an L-pick to help me uproot prickley pear cactus on my land. All it took was a swing or two. These tools are so well made and heavily weighted that they add heft to a swing even from a person of my size and strength. The tools made up for what I lacked in power and got the job done with minimal effort on my part. True to the name, this made for easy digging. So glad I bought from EasyDigging.com.

It's a joy to use a tool that works well. My Brazillian long handled ground adze works so much better for clearing sod and ground prep than any form of shovel or spade. I bought the tool to excavate a rain garden, trench for French drains and prep for a flagstone walk. So far I'm seeing 3-5x the output over a shovel on the same projects and my back isn't sore.

These are fine, durable digging tools for which my pride and pocketbook are pleased to own. My back has its complaints, but I stopped listening to my back a long time ago. Though I've only had the grub hoe and Maddox a few weeks, I am happy so far. While it would be insane to find any joy in moving dirt from one spot to another, it is, on occasion, necessary. And these two tools make the dirty drudgery doable.

This is the first set of hoes I bought, while I was gifted with another. I am a teacher and practitioner of Matayoshi Kobudo Shinbukai and one of the weapons we teach is the hoe. Finding the right one to workout with is not easy and the 4" hoe is perfect (I was gifted a 6" which is way too big). I have used the 6" for de-weeding a sand volleyball pit and other removal of noxious weeds. You just aren't going to find the hoe you need at Home Depot or Lowes, not if you are doing hard gardening. I might practice with a hoe but I do use them as well. Huge cudos for a great hoe!

I find that the grub hoe is good for filling the gap between shovels/spades and mattocks. It works well for breaking into tougher soil and weeds but still has trouble with large roots and dry compacted clay. I can get things done really fast using a hoe, but I also get tired quickly if I'm not careful. This hoe does not slow me down so I need to pace myself. I heard about this hoe from David Goodman and Scott Head.

I received the 6" Grub Hoe very quickly after ordering it. Upon receipt, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the handle was a nice straight grained piece. I sanded it down and applied a good oil finish. Sharpened the cutting edge on the hoe and got to work in the "garden" chopping and removing the sod and weeds that had grown in there over years of neglect. The long handle and heavy head on this hoe make it a relative pleasure to use. The perfect tool for getting rid of deeply rooted problem plants.

I heard about these tools through David the Good, he is an honest guy so I felt confident spending my money on a brand that he recommends. I purchased two grub hoes and have been very happy with them. In the past I have broken or worn out similar products from lesser manufacturers (truper, yardworks), but with EasyDigging I feel like I finally got a high quality tool for my money that is going to last. Solid construction and simple design, everything they need to be and nothing fancy about it. Customer service was excellent, Greg answered my questions quickly and professionally. EasyDigging's products are a breath of fresh air in a world that is otherwise filled with cheap tools that don't last. These are without a doubt the best hand tools I have ever purchased, thank you Greg!

We're in a new house with new lawn so I was looking for cost effective way to till soil for future gardens. Only tools I had are shovels and rake for basic maintenance. First garden is a 12 ft diameter garden around a tree where I started removing clay soil sod last fall with shovel. Very time consuming, taking too much dirt, etc. Looked at many websites until I came across Easy Digging. Watched videos and decided to give the Grub Hoe a try. Bought it in February and put it together and was impressed with the weight of hoe and hefty long handle. Now mid-March, on a warm day, just finished removing remainder of sod (little over half of garden) in one day. Loved the Grub Hoe. Admittedly the soil is wet and soft, but still heavy clay and the hoe worked great. Sod removal went much quicker and more uniform in depth than using shovel.

After a couple of weeks of clearing sod for creation of new intensive beds, I can say I'm quite pleased with the grub and grape hoe. I really valued the customer service and phone conversation I had as well. They're not as hard to assemble as I thought. I would say clearing the sod was enjoyable for me and I also enjoyed using the tools. David the Good was right, these are great. They also seem like a dynamic tool to have in the shed. I'm so excited about these kind of hoes actually, I'm going to be making a shootout video on youtube. What I value is that I used to clear sod with a spade and that was really laborious. Since I don't care to move it anywhere except the compost pile, the hoe is much better AND you can use it barefoot since you're not stepping on it (although I bet that's not recommended because you could chop a toe). Now that my job is done, I actually find myself looking for more sod to chop and clear. I paired it with a Johnny's three tooth cultivator to pull the grass clumps out and then a bed prep rake and I really was able to clear a lot of grass. Now I have my deep beds and the winter cereal rye is cover cropping them getting ready for first planting.

I recently bought the 4 inch grub hoe. It works incredibly fast and easy. We've been removing a lawn of mostly crabgrass. The hoe makes it fast and easy to cut under the roots and also to control the depth of the cut. So glad to have found such a quality tool. I also bought the hand tool, a mini-grub hoe. Works so much better than a shovel or towel. Makes hacking up weeds fun! And I loved buying from a small company where I could speak to someone, call back and he remembered me. A very nice guy who was also quite helpful.

I've been using the Grub Hoe to prepare my garden this year. But since my crop is growing I needed something a little smaller for weeding. Before my grub hoe I was using a regular hoe. Not well made, the hoe head soon fell off. So, I splurged and ordered my grub hoe to do my simple flower gardening. It is very well made, but I find it almost too heavy to use since I am a senior citizen with limited mobility. Thinking back, I think it did come in 2 different weights. I must have ordered the heavier one. Long ago, my dad had a well-used grub hoe with 3 different digging blades forming a T with the handle. One blade was wide and one narrow. I may order that one if I can find it!

The grub and grape hoes are simply great for yard work. I have used them in my pre US days back in India and surprised that they are not popular here. However, the handle on the grub hoe broke on day one. May be use some hard plastic to make the handle. The wood can easily crack and break as I found out. Can you ship me a new handle?

If you're looking to add a versatile tool to your collection look no further than this grub hoe. I purchased the 6" version to cultivate my clay mid-Atlantic soil for various projects (sod, flowerbed, drainage) and it has performed great. Changing your angle of attack will allow the user to take a shallow dig to weed the surface or take a steeper approach and dig in to pull and turn material. The steel blade is heavy and sharp. I would recommend the 4" for most jobs but needed the extra weight and width of the 6" for my clay soil and faster removal in areas a small tiller could not reach. The grub hoe allowed me to trench for 4" drain pipe in less than a 1/4 the time a spade shovel did. I wish I had known about this tool years ago. I plan to use the tool to breakup the ground this fall before coming through with a small tiller to amend the soil for fall lawn renovation.

I started digging trenches with a rented Ditch-Witch to install an underground sprinkler system in my Pecan orchard. I was doing this by myself and had over 6,000 feet of trenches. Trenchers don't always remove all of the dirt from the bottom of a trench, and dirt will fall back into, or be washed back into the trenches by rain, so it is necessary to remove residual dirt from the bottom by hand. First I purchased a special (narrow) trencher shovel at a Hardware store which physically nearly killed me trying to wrestle the dirt out of the trenches. I thought there must be a better way! I found the Easy Digging "Bottom Digger" on-line and thought this is what I visualized as something that should work. I thought that the person that invented and made this tool had been in my shoes before. I would not have been able to complete my project if I had not purchased the Bottom Digger. It will clean out dirt, muddy heavy clay soil, and even dip out water. Purchasing the Bottom Digger was a very wise investment for me. Also, I purchased a Grub Hoe from Easy Digging. The Grubbing Hoe is a real Hoe not a cheap toy. It works very good. I received my order within 3 days all well packaged including instruction sheets.

Customer service was excellent. Owner personally called my post office to help sort out an order. Product works excellent and is great for removing sod, large weeds, and trenching/tilling garden beds. I even used it to help dig out pathways in a raised bed.

I needed a tool that could tear through sod like a beaver in a paper mill....many searches lead me to EasyDigging where I got me the 6" Grub Hoe. Wow, is all I can say. The purchase was easy to do online, shipped quickly, even given the pace at which the USPS operates, it was here in about a week. I believe the forging was made in India, not sure about the wooden handle. Regardless, this thing is a beast, and does well what I needed it for, to tear through sod. Buy 1 or 2, you will not regret it.

I purchased the 6" Grub Hoe this spring. It was out of stock last year when I needed it and Santa didn't bring it to me in December, even though it was on my list. This thing is awesome. I mainly wanted it for digging potato rows deep enough so I could backfill with compost. It definitely does the trick. I also used it for planting the rest of my garden. It makes short work out of making planting holes deep enough to put compost and fertilizer in. I will admit, it scared my wife a bit when I was chopping away near her fingers. The quality of this tool is unsurpassed. If ever there is a zombie apocalypse, the 6" grub hoe will be one of the first things I grab.

I purchased the 6 inch grub hoe, these type of tools are not sold in the retail stores, it saved me lots of time clearing the garden area out. It's a top quality tool, well made & will last a lifetime. I will be purchasing a few other tools soon from Easy Digging.

I was looking at information about how to dig trenches as I am planning to put a shed in the backyard with electric for a workshop. The distance is about 30ft long and about 20' deep as the electric cable was buried in PVC at 18' deep. I also wanted to install a separate PVC conduit for internet cable in the same trench. The path ran close to a dry well so I didn't want to risk damage from a machine, and I wanted to try to save the sod to place back on the trench. One of the tools recommended from my research that I wanted to try was a grub hoe, but that style of hoe is difficult to find at your local big box stores. I found this website recommended from a couple articles and forums I read and they had solid looking tools. I decided to buy a grub hoe, a sharpshooter shovel, and a trenching shovel. I bribed my brother-in-law to help with the digging. We first started by using left over 12ft house siding strips to plan the path and mark an outline 10' wide in spray paint. The I put out a tarp and used a lawn edger to cut 10'x10' square sod pieces and used a shovel to pry and dig them up and lay them down at the back of the tarp. This got us down about 4'. Next, we planned to dig in three passes of 5-6' depth increments. The sharpshooter shovel was the best tool as at the early depths as it appeared to penetrate the soil which at this point was mostly clay. We rotated between the grub hoe and regular shovel to pull dirt out of the trench and onto the tarp as we dug deeper, then used the sharpshooter to penetrate or shave off dirt at the edge of the existing trench. We'd use the sharpshooter as we went to square the trench instead of a 'V' shape. Since the path ran close to the dry well, I ended up slightly puncturing a pea gravel spot that was wrapped in landscape fabric. I had to pry the corner of the pea gravel 'pillow' and dig underneath it. The sharpshooter came in handy to slowly chip away at the dirt underneath without damaging the 'pillow'. There was also a 4' PVC drainage pipe that I suspected but wound up in an unexpected path, so hand digging saved us from having to repair that. However, things significantly got harder at a depth of about 16'. To get to 20' deep, the final 4' was very compacted clay with rocks and gravel. At this point, using a regular or sharpshooter shovel on this soil only produced very small chips, and that's with a lot of force. The best tool at this point was the grub hoe as we could get a wind up and let gravity do the work to help chip the dirt away. The rocks made it a bit difficult as the grub hoe blade wouldn't make progress if there were rocks in the path. In hindsight, a pickaxe might have been better, but I felt the grub hoe still worked well enough to not run to the big box store to buy a pickaxe. We used the grub hoe to chip the spoil, then use the sharpshooter and regular shovels to remove the soil at this depth. When we got to 20', we used the trenching shovel to help dig out a flat bottom for the conduit. We had to measure 18' from the top of trench at ground level to the top of the PVC. Once that was completed, we did a victory pose on the large mound of dirt we excavated. The next problem was that next to the house, there was a concrete lip at about 16-18' deep that prevented the PVC sweep from being flush against the house and getting to a depth of 18' at the bottom of the trench. At this point, I got a 4lb sledge and chisel and we took turns chipping a path in the concrete so that the bottom of both PVC sweeps exited at 20' deep. It took some time, but we finally got the PVC conduit dry fitted, then glued together. Next we started the backfill, and to provide for inspection, we cut two 4ft PVC pipes to place 6ft from each end of the conduit for depth measurements. I had bought a 8x8' tamper so that we could try to keep those in place and reduce settling of the dirt in the trench. We tamped as we went for every 4-6'. Once we got near the top, I soaked the trench with water to try to get any soil to settle (especially under the pea gravel 'pillow'). After doing that a couple of times, I placed the sod pieces I cut back on top of the trench. I had to shave off the bottoms with a potting trowel with a serrated edge of the sod pieces because the bottoms were uneven from prying up the grass root mass. I raised sod an inch or so expecting more settling, but the hand tamping we did seemed to avoid any noticeable settling. Finally, I took topsoil and grass seed to try to fill the gaps between the sod squares. There was a pile of leftover dirt that I kept on a tarp (which I used later to raise the grade of my dry well, which had settled some 2-3' over roughly a 4x4' square, which is a different story). Time wise, the two of us spent 9 hours Saturday digging the trench, 6 hours on Sunday chipping concrete, laying and gluing PVC conduit, then partially backfilling about 12', the. Monday about 6 hours finishing the backfill and sod replacement. The MVP was the grub hoe for the heavy duty work at the super hard soil, though the sharpshooter pulled its weight in gold as well. Overall the tools held up to a lot of abuse and I'm thrilled with the purchase. If your digging a trench, both the grub hoe and sharpshooter shovel are a must! Hope this is helpful.

I was looking for an easier way to pull up some old turf in my yard, easier than a flat bladed shovel. The Grub Hoe worked well and I was developing the knack of it when I ran out of turf to remove. It is a well built tool and will have a place in my shed.

After conducting considerable research on the best tools for easing my gardening work and the best companies to order from, I settled on a grub hoe from Easy Digging. My husband was convinced we didn't need another gardening tool and made disparaging remarks about my purchase. Until he tried it, that is. Now I can hardly get it away from him! Great product from a great company with excellent customer service!

I've been using the grub hoe to move around sod and dirt from between garden beds, break up a compacted pile of soil and any task I might have used a straight spade or pick-mattock for before. Its a solid tool and I expect to use it for years to come.

I love my new grub hoe & garden fork. I have them to prepare/turn planting beds that were covered in weeds in the garden as well as to dig holes for planting trees. It is so much faster than with the shovel. I purchased my items on the recommendation of David the Good and I have not been disappointed. I already ordered the new small hand hoe. I highly recommend these products.

Easy to buy, decently quick shipping, and an EXCELLENT grub hoe!! It's just the right weight for chopping up my garden beds and mixing in compost. It's still winter so I haven't gotten to use it fully yet, but I did a practice run tilling up some old beds on a nice day and it was powerful, sharp, and feels like it will last a long time!

I purchased a broadfork, a garden fork, a grub hoe and a fork hoe. I have used everything but the grub hoe so far. I have rocky soil with clay. By rocky I mean anything from 1 inch to 8 inch rock. By clay I mean hard pan clay at about 4 to 8 inches down. I have dug before using a pick and a digging bar; it is terrible. I started using the broadfork, fork hoe, and garden fork instead of digging bar and shovel. I am amazed at how well these tools work. It is easier to use my broadfork than my Troy Built. The Tory Built is getting sold. I cannot recommend the tools or Easy Digging more favorably. Thank you Easy Digging!!

Due to some health issues I got a bit lackadaisical in my gardening efforts and soon had some big weed roots. I tried using a regular hoe, a pick axe, and even a shovel and couldn't get some of these roots out. Several months ago I happened to watch YouTube in which Scott Head reviewed your grub hoe. I have been trying to purchase one ever since. It kept going out of stock! Finally I was able to put my order in and discovered I had accidently ordered two! I immediately called and received the most efficient and professional customer service I have ever received. Once everything got squared away I eagerly awaited my shipping notification. It said I should expect delivery on 12/20. I didn't receive it until 1/5/21. This was NOT an Easy Digging issue but rather USPS. I have since used my 6" grub hoe and absolutely love it. I was able to get out the biggest of the weed roots and can move on to prepping my garden area. I still have health issues, but using this has helped me tremendously. I highly recommend it to everyone.

I saw a video on YouTube where a woman used a grub hoe to dig holes. It looked much easier than my method of jumping with both feet on a shovel. I decided to try one. The weight helps it go into the ground and I don't have to lift shovel full of soil. The temp is in 50's so not digging in flower garden yet. I just made a few chops into dirt to test it. Think I will like it. I used the garden fork that I purchased to dislodge a leaf dam at my drive way. I am usually not able to open the clog with a pitch fork since that requires lifting heavy wet packed leaves. The weight of fork and long tines made quick work of clog. A few chops and pulls and clog was open. Love the fork.

I have purchased several garden tools from Easy Digging. All where long handle and perform very well. In and around the garden they are my go to tools. The 4" hoe for digging and trenching. The fork for breaking turning beds. The grape hoe for weeding. The pointed hoe for furrows. The ground fork for aerating. This set does everything I need quickly and with minimal effort. On several occasions, I have contacted Easy Digging for questions and delivery issues (USPS)... All communications have been responsive and with a quick resolution. I will purchase from them again and recommend them to friends and family.
