How to use a Trenching Hoe
Often a digging spade is used to create the vertical rear portion of the trench (shown at left)
and to remove the sod over the trench (so that the sections of sod can be replaced afterwards).

The loose dirt pulled up and out by the trenching hoe (also called a grub hoe) should be
dragged to the side of the trench chosen to minimize interference with access for installing
pipes or adding drainage gravel.

A narrow trenching hoe of about 4" can be used for shallow lines for things like lawn sprinklers.

A wider trenching hoe of around 6" is used for deeper trenches and for installing sewer pipes
and for installing drainage systems.
