Why is this shovel better?

It's better because it's stronger, because it is designed properly, and because it will last much longer than hardware store shovels.

The hollow back blade (shovel head) is formed from one piece of thick 14 gauge carbon steel. It features upturned sides for better material retention. The professional grade handle has a thick fiberglass outer tube, with a solid fiberglass core in the critical lower area where head and handle connect.

A shovel built this way will last a long time. Scoop and throw rocks, soil, mulch, or grain all day with no worries about handle breakage. You can leave it in the back of your truck all year, and it won't rot like a wooden handled shovel. The kind of use and abuse that will destroy half a dozen inexpensive wooden hardware store shovels will barely scratch this tool.

What is a Square Point shovel used for?

This style is mainly used for scooping and transfering material from here to there, but it can do a little digging too.

Scooping - The square point shovel will effectively move material (soil, gravel, mulch, grain) to a new area or into a wheelbarrow. The straight flat front edge is great for scraping up and lifting material from a flat surface (floor, pavement, truck bed). The upturned edges help it hold more material. It can be plunged into the upper area of a pile, or pushed in with your foot. The blade-to-handle angle (medium lift) reduces bending while shoveling.

Digging - The square point shovel is NOT intended for digging in undisturbed soil or sod, but it will do a great a job of scraping stubborn material from a driveway or sidewalk. When doing lots of heavy digging, our round point shovel, or our flat garden spade will be a better choice.

Benefits of Fiberglass Handles...

  • Greater strength pound for pound than steel.
  • They are very difficult to damage.
  • Resists impact, and is non-denting.
  • Will not absorb moisture or warp.
  • Will not conduct electricity.

HISCO's fiberglass handles have a legacy of premium performance. All HISCO handles are produced from thousands of continuous strands of fiberglass saturated with resins, and have a smooth polyester veil (coating) on the surface. The veil gives the handle a smooth comfortable finish and keeps the fiberglass from splintering or scratching. The D-Grips, used on short handled tools, are made of one-piece high-density nylon.

The long handled digging shovels feature the 8-inch Tuffoam double-dip grips which have been designed for the toughest industrial applications. The grips have a durable, vinyl inner liner and a comfortable, non-slip foam exterior that provides long life and helps prevent potential harmful hand fatigue.
